Policy Statement:

This policy outlines the duties and responsibilities of school bus drivers employed by Leading Source Transportation and Consulting, LLC, in accordance with the laws and regulations of the state of Louisiana. School bus drivers play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students during their transportation to and from school and related activities. This policy aims to establish clear guidelines for school bus driver conduct, safety protocols, and operational procedures.

1. Driver Qualifications and Training:

1.1. All school bus drivers must meet the qualifications and licensing requirements as mandated by the Louisiana Department of Education and the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles.


1.2. School bus drivers are required to complete initial training and regular refresher courses on safe driving practices, emergency procedures, student management, and first aid.


1.3. Drivers must maintain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements, as well as any other certifications required by state regulations.

2. Safety and Compliance:

2.1. School bus drivers are responsible for conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections of their vehicles to ensure they are in proper working condition.


2.2. Drivers must strictly adhere to all traffic laws and regulations, including speed limits, stopping for railroad crossings, and obeying all road signs.


2.3. School bus drivers must enforce safety rules among students while on the bus, ensuring that students remain seated and use seat belts when provided.


2.4. In the event of inclement weather, drivers should exercise extra caution and follow established protocols for safe operation.

3. Student Management:

3.1. School bus drivers must establish a positive and respectful atmosphere on the bus, maintaining discipline and order among students.


3.2. Drivers should address any disruptive behavior promptly and appropriately, following the school district’s code of conduct and reporting incidents to the appropriate school officials.


3.3. Drivers must ensure that all students are safely seated before the bus begins moving and that all students disembark safely at their designated stops.

4. Emergency Procedures:

4.1. School bus drivers must be well-versed in emergency evacuation procedures and conduct regular drills with students to ensure they know how to exit the bus safely in case of an emergency.


4.2. In the event of an accident or other emergency, drivers should follow established protocols for notifying authorities, communicating with dispatch, and providing assistance to students as needed.

5. Communication and Reporting:

5.1. School bus drivers are required to maintain effective communication with the transportation department, school administrators, and parents/guardians regarding any delays, incidents, or concerns related to bus operations.


5.2. Drivers must complete and submit accurate daily route logs and incident reports as required by the school district and state regulations.

6. Professionalism:

6.1. School bus drivers are expected to dress in a professional manner that represents the school district and to maintain a courteous and respectful attitude towards students, parents, and colleagues.


6.2. Drivers should refrain from using electronic devices while driving, except in cases of emergencies, and should avoid any behavior that may distract them from their primary responsibility of safely transporting students.

7. Continuous Improvement:

7.1. School bus drivers are encouraged to participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance their skills and stay current with changes in regulations and best practices.

8. Non-Discrimination:

8.1. School bus drivers must treat all students and colleagues with fairness and respect, without discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or other protected characteristics.

9. Policy Review:

9.1. This policy will be reviewed and updated as necessary to ensure alignment with state laws, regulations, and the evolving needs of the school district.

10. Compliance and Consequences:

10.1. Failure to adhere to this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination, in accordance with the school district’s disciplinary procedures.

This policy is effective as of hire date and supersedes any previous policies related to school bus driver duties.
